AN EVENING WITH ZABOU BREITMAN

You are invited to an Evening with director and actor Zabou Breitman and a special screening of Swallows of Kabul (Les Hirondelles De Kaboul) – a thought-provoking animated film which tackles life in Kabul under Taliban rule.

Zabou Brietman, co-director of The Swallows of Kabul

With the kind support of the French Embassy in New Zealand, you will be able to meet the co-director of the film Zabou Breitman. Zabou will introduce her film, and then being available after the screening to answer questions.

Zabou is a leading figure of French film and theatre. At the age of four, she appeared in her first movie and since 1981, has acted in dozens of roles in films, TV movies, and theatre productions. She made her directorial debut in 2001 with Se souvenir des belles choses, for which she won a César Award for Best Debut.

Based on Yasmina Khadra’s 2002 novel of the same name, Zabou worked with her co-director Eléa Gobbé-Mévellec, to bring this bittersweet tale of Taliban oppression and artistic resistance to life. Their innovative approach to animation, which involved shooting the whole script with actors in costume before painting the watercolour animation onto the film. This approach allowed the directors to create a level of intimacy often lacking in animated films, through including the actors’ rhythms and improvisations into the final cut.
