Granny’s Funeral
Adieu Berthe: l’Enterrement de Mémé
de Bruno Podalydès
In the midst of a full-blown midlife crisis, Armand (The Conquest’s Denis Podalydès) navigates haphazardly between his job as a chemist and his passion for magic. Where matters of the heart are concerned, he’s torn between his wife Hélène (Isabelle Candelier) and his mistress, Alix (Orchestra Seats’ Valérie Lemercier).
And as for family life… what a fiasco! With an interfering mother-in- law, kids with whom he can no longer communicate and Alix’s young daughter (whose birthday is quickly approaching), Armand does not know which way to turn…
And then his grandmother Berthe dies, and he’s landed with the extra task of arranging the funeral. It’s all too much for Armand, who finds himself forced to battle against the mounting distractions in his life as he tries to plan an appropriate funeral for her.
Bruno Podalydès’ Granny’s Funeral premiered at the Director’s Fortnight section of the Cannes International Film Festival 2012 with crowds leaving in hysterics and enthusiastic reviews from the press. “The script is littered with witty wordplay and comedic set pieces,” says the Irish Film Institute, “making the film somewhat reminiscent of a Gallic Woody Allen.”
