Synopsis

After a violent altercation, Far’Hook, a young rapper, must go off the radar and leave Paris to reassess his behaviour. On the suggestion of his producer Bilal, he becomes an unlikely and unwilling chauffeur to Bilal’s father Serge (Gérard Depardieu) as they make a tour of all of the ports of France, following the path taken by the painter Joseph Vernet. Despite the generation gap and cultural discrepancies, the two polarising characters end up forming an unexpected friendship.

Director Rachid Djaïdani succeeds in creating a work which both satisfies the classic elements of a road movie, and also offers a rich portrait of France’s society today. Boasting realistic and carefully crafted performances by Gérard Depardieu and real-life rapper Sadek, the film offers an open and honest view on two initially opposing worlds: that of Serge, a worker from the North whose world has disintegrated, and that of Far’Hook from Paris, part of a young generation in search of a way to fit in French society. Demonstrating the possibility for friendship to overcome cultural clashes, misunderstandings and prejudices, Tour de France is a heart-warming drama.
