“Something rather wonderful… Vivid colours and elegant camera choreography are bound together by Michel Legrand’s sumptuous score. And never has an Esso station looked so romantic.” Time Out

Cherbourg, November 1957. Madame Emery and her daughter, Geneviève, run a store called The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. Geneviève is in love with Guy, a mechanic working in a garage. Their brief romance is interrupted when Guy is drafted to serve in the Algerian War. Pregnant and desperate because she has little news of Guy, Geneviève is forced by her mother to marry Roland, an older businessman, and leaves Cherbourg.

Jacques Demy and composer Michel Legrand made a unique and crazy experiment: a melodrama entirely sung much in the style of an opera of the everyday. The bright and vivid colour photography also contributed to the popularity of the film as Catherine Deneuve’s Geneviève sung herself into audience’s hearts. Either crazily admired or mocked, the film was an international success upon its release and has since become a major reference in world cinema.
