Wheelchair-bound by cerebral palsy, seventeen-year-old Julien (Fabien Héraud) is the apple of his mother’s eye, but constantly yearns for the approval of his distant father, Paul (Jacques Gamblin).
In a bid to bond with his father, Julien comes up with the seemingly crazy idea of asking him to participate with him in the prestigious Ironman race in the French Riviera, a triathlon in which his father has previously competed.
This race, which is exceptionally grueling, is even more so when Paul has to help his disabled son throughout the course. Julien and Paul must work together to complete an epic journey of patience, resilience and determination.
Director Nils Tavernier successfully captures the tension and spirit of this epic race, having shot a lot of the footage at the event itself. Featuring characters inspired by a true story, The Finishers is an emotionally involving film. Exceptional performances from its cast makes this a heart-warming addition to the festival.
Beyond the sporting exploit, this is the story of one family’s exemplary combat, and a moving portrait of the love between a father and his son.
