Synopsis

It’s a hot summer in the south of France. Fires are starting everywhere and tempers are flaring at the local fire station where Bénédicte has begun her new job, leading a group of seasoned veteran fire fighters who have difficulty in accepting a woman in her position. But in the heat of the chaos, personal tensions are set aside as the courageous squad pulls together to battle fires threatening their communities.

Shot in a manner which evokes the style of a documentary, Pierre Jolivet’s film celebrates the heroic nature of the vital work carried out by firemen and firewomen, without shying away from the struggles of the job.

Fans of the 2017 festival programme will be familiar with the name of Roschdy Zem, celebrated director behind the acclaimed drama Monsieur Chocolat. His interpretation of stoic fire captain Philippe is utterly believable, creating an unmissable onscreen partnership with Émilie Dequenne’s (also in This Is Our Land and See You Up There) sensitively rendered Bénédicte. With an effective script, clever directorial choices and strong performances, The Brigade shows the reality of being a firefighter in all its beauty and its accompanying pain. As the character of Philippe states himself as he watches a fire from afar: “Yes, it’s beautiful. But from a distance.”
