Synopsis

Martin Clément, born Marvin Bijou, escapes from his small village in the Vosges Mountains, leaving behind the intolerance and rejection he suffers from his peers and his family. It is his high school teacher who offers him a way out when discovering his talent for theatre. Moving to Paris, he finds solace in the performing arts where he is able to freely explore his personal identity. Soon Martin is willing to risk everything to craft a stage show that represents so much more than success: it’s his path to reinvention.

Greatly inspired by Edouard Louis’ 2014 autobiography The End of Eddy, Anne Fontaine (The Innocents, 2016) has created a gripping coming-of-age story through Martin’s struggle to accept his personal identity and navigate a world that fights him at every corner. Finnegan Oldfield gives an exceedingly raw and moving performance as the adult Martin who brings his life story to the stage with the help of Isabelle Huppert, playing herself. Their climatic stage performance, a theatre scene bathed in black and burgundy, is a powerful call for artistic expression and voicing of one’s own identities.
