Synopsis

When octogenarian French New Wave legend Agnès Varda and 30-something photograffeur JR embark together on a journey across France, expect more than the usual road trip. As they travel through the country, they discover and profile characters they meet in small villages, on the docks and at the local factories. As the duo starts posting giant portraits of the people (and goats) they meet along the way — creating urban and rural open-air installations — they develop a heart-warming and complicit friendship.

Despite more than a half century age difference, documentary filmmaker Agnès Varda and artist JR have more in common than one may think: a curiosity for people and a passion for images —both questioning them and sharing them. The complicity between the two artists, joyful, teasing, full of humour, is passed on to the viewer in this moving and poetic film — as much about the process of making art as about the magic that is art. As the story progresses, you will only wish for this journey to run longer, for wheelchair races through the Louvre to go faster and for new friendships to blossom.

The documentary is full of beautiful film references to Varda’s own work and the film history she represents; she was recently awarded an Honorary Oscar for her lifetime achievement (as the first ever woman director in the history of the Academy Awards).
