Synopsis

Drawing on the events of the AIDS crisis in the early 1990s, BPM (Beats Per Minute) tells the story of ACT UP, a group of AIDS activists fighting against an obstinate government and callous pharmaceutical industry to gain education and treatment. We experience this tumultuous period in history through the eyes of Nathan (Arnaud Valois), a new recruit to ACT UP who begins a romance with the HIV positive activist Sean (Nahuel Pérez Biscayart, also in See You Up There).

French writer and director Robin Campillo worked in conjunction with Phillippe Mangeot who is both an HIV activist and educator. The script is a raw and visceral exploration which simultaneously achieves a staggering emotional depth and tenderness, most centrally through the romance which blossoms between Nathan and Sean, who is frustrated by the lack of radical action taken by ACT UP. As the health of Sean and others within the group worsens, the viewer is confronted by the true cost of an intransigent government and an unthinking public in the face of human suffering; “It [AIDS] is a war, a war invisible to the eyes of others… and we do not want to die.”
