Fans of the 2008 art-house thriller I’ve Loved You So Long are in for a treat with its director, Philippe Claudel, and its Oscar-nominated lead actress Kristin Scott Thomas reuniting for the suspenseful drama, Before the Winter Chill.
Scott Thomas plays the role of Lucie, the wife of a brilliant neurosurgeon (Jean de Florette’s Daniel Auteuil), who is suffering from a late-career crisis due to the advances of a mysterious young woman (Leïla Bekhti). As the once-perfect marriage begins to unravel, suspicion and paranoia overtake everyone and long-buried truths are finally revealed.
French cinema favourites Auteuil and Scott Thomas are superb as the wealthy and seemingly happy couple with a sea of raw nerves kept just below the surface. Just as brilliant is the rising star Bekhti, best known for A Prophet and her César Award-winning performance in All That Glitters.
This is a handsomely made and thought-provoking drama-thriller, with a tightly plotted story, brilliantly drawn characters, slow-burning intrigue and a delicate touch of melancholy.
